About

The African American Women’s History Month Project, Inc. is a Florida-based 501(c)(3) non-profit. It was founded in 1998 as the Orlando Women’s History Month Project, Inc. and was reorganized in 2011. The purpose of the project is to honor, “Community Stars” for their contributions to enhancing and sustaining the communities in which we live across the nation.

These community stars will be identified based on their hard work and dedication to the African American communities in which they reside. As we see so many negative images of our people in the media, it is important that we focus on the “good” and highlight extraordinary individuals who are developing and sustaining programs, partnerships, and careers across the world that foster and embody the positive growth and development of our people. It’s not enough for us to know that there are “good people”, but to provide a platform whereby they are celebrated publicly for their hard work and dedication. This program will give us the opportunity to do this! We truly believe in our organization’s touchstone, “Celebrating the Lives and Legacy of African Americans.”

To date, the project has honored well over 100 women, a "few good men" and several organizations, provided scholarships to graduating high school seniors, and held many workshops for business empowerment and personal growth and development. Now, under its new national umbrella the AAWHMP, Inc., will expand its programs coinciding with the national celebration of Women’s History Month in March.

The project was founded by Chenise Lytrelle Williams and was inspired by the work and teachings of her numerous mentors.

We believe all women can embrace who they are,
can define their future, and can change the world.
